A team of researchers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology has successfully sent a quantum version of "Roses are red, violets are blue" to the Canary Islands from Colorado. It's the first time we've been able to send a message using quantum encryption over this long a distance, proving that it is possible to keep information secure over vast distances.
"We're now closer than ever before to creating an unhackable global network," lead researcher Martin Stevens said in a press release. "Our experiment shows that quantum communication can be scaled up to send secure messages across the world."
Quantum encryption takes advantage of the fundamental nature of photons (particles of light) and their unique chemical makeup. In short, photons have both particle-like and wave-like qualities and behave differently than any other particle known to man. This is why they're perfect for encoding information in an entirely new way.
